Julius S. Mehok, 93, of Windber, passed away March 12, 2017, at Richland Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center. Born March 3, 1924, he was the second of five children of John and Mary (Jozsi) Mehok. A lifelong resident of Windber, Julius worked as a coalminer, steelworker and construction worker. But he perhaps will be best remembered as an artist.

Entirely self-taught through practice and careful observation of technique, Julius began painting in his early teens, inspired in particular by the great classic landscape artists. For the first decades of his art career, he produced mostly highly detailed landscapes inspired by the local countryside, as well as vignettes that portrayed scenes from his youth in and around his childhood home in Mine 37.
